WTA Levy Debate

Date:
03/10/2010 - 11:45am - 1:30pm

Sponsored by the Northwest Business Club

DEBATE ISSUE: Voters should approve the measure on the Whatcom County April ballot to increase sales tax by .02 percent to ensure WTA’s continued ability to provide public transportation.

In Affirmation: Mayor Dan Pike, co-chairman of a group favoring the sales tax.

In Opposition: Brett Bonner, former KGMI talk show host, and representing a group that opposes the tax.

Moderator: Prof. Dennis Murphy. Dean Emeritus of the College of Business and Economics and as interim Western Washington University Provost

The Whatcom Transit Authority is 90% financed from taxpayer funding. In times of recession, like now, sales taxes are down, while the need for public transportation has increased.

To help meet its operating costs the WTA has put a tax increase measure before the Whatcom County voters to be decided upon on April 27, 2010. The purpose of this debate is to ferret out the facts so we will be knowledgeable voters.
