Free Speech in School
Bellingham forum address free speech in public schools
A public forum on "Free Speech in Public Schools" will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, in Bellingham City Council chambers, 210 Lottie St.
Guest speaker will be Mary Beth Tinker, plaintiff in the landmark free-speech case Tinker v. Des Moines.
While a student in 1965, Tinker, her brother and a friend were sent home from public school for wearing black armbands to protest the Vietnam War. In 1969, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned lower court rulings and said that violated their First Amendment rights.
The free forum is being hosted by the city of Bellingham and by Western Washington University's Ralph Munro Institute for Civic Education.
