State Women Elect Chambers to Lead

Catherine Chambers, President of the Whatcom County Democratic Women’s Club, and candidate for Bellingham City Council, 6th Ward, was elected President of the Washington State Federation of Democratic Women at its state convention June 21. Chambers, a long time Bellingham community organizer, said “I am honored and grateful to the women of this state for this opportunity.”

The Washington State Federation of Democratic Women was formed in 1971 and is dedicated to encouraging full participation of women at every level of the Democratic Party. Noting the increase in the number of women now holding office, Chambers stressed the work of the Democratic Party in striving for gender diversity.

As Federation President, Catherine Chambers is urging Senate Majority Leader, Lisa Brown and Majority Leader of the House Frank Chopp to form a Select Committee on the Status of Women in the State of Washington. “We need to assess how women in Washington are doing as a whole,” Chambers said, “in honor of the 100 year anniversary of women obtaining the right to vote in Washington State.”

Also elected at the recent meeting were Lynn Evich, state treasurer, and Saliha Miller, vice -president for the state Central Area, both active members of the Whatcom County Democratic Women’s Club.
