Democrats Turn Out to Discuss Platform
Democrats gathered Sat. March 6 at various locations around the county to discuss upcoming elections and debate their platform. These Grassroots Strategy Sessions were modeled after the Precinct caucuses from 2008, and revolved around revising and updating the Whatcom County platform.
“We had a very interesting lively fun-filled discussion,” said Peggy Borgens, Whatcom Dems Treasurer, “A great opportunity to get into the issues.” At each meeting, the concerned citizens tackled two broad areas of policy, such as Health Care or Agriculture, in groups of six to ten people. They came up a few broad values statements that express their positions and then a few specific policy proposals they would like to see their elected officals work towards enacting.
The notes and suggestions from these meetings will be compiled at the Platform Committee meeting, March 10 at 6pm at the Whatcom Democrats office. From there they will be formalized into a platform and then ratified at the County Convention, held April 10 at 10am at Shuksan Middle School in Bellingham.
